Scheduling rules
Rules are the limits Roz keeps to whenever a roster is built — by you or by Roz. They’re how you encode “what’s allowed” once, so you don’t have to remember it on every shift.
Common rules
- Minimum rest between shifts — e.g. at least 10 hours off before the next shift.
- Maximum weekly hours — a cap per person, or per role (e.g. juniors max 30h/week).
- Maximum shift length — no single shift longer than X hours.
- Blackout dates — days no one (or a specific person) can be rostered.
How rules show up
- In the editor, any shift that breaks a rule is flagged with a warning.
- When Roz proposes a roster, it works inside your rules and won’t quietly break one.
- You can still override a warning when you genuinely need to — rules guide you, they don’t lock you out.
Adding or changing a rule
Open the Rules tab to add, edit, or remove a rule. You can also ask Roz — “Add a rule capping junior staff at 30 hours a week” — and it will set it up for you to confirm.
Tip
Start with the rules you’d be embarrassed to break (rest periods, legal caps). Add softer preferences as staff preferences rather than hard rules, so Roz can trade them off when coverage is tight.
